62 WEAC members earn National Board Certification in 2018

Sixty-two WEAC members recently joined the ranks of Nationally Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) in Wisconsin, and 26 renewed their certification. Known as one of the top honors in the profession, NBCTs are assessed by their peers on 5 core propositions of accomplished teaching. WEAC is the state leader in providing candidate support; WEAC supports include intensive summer Jump Start training, monthly in-person cohorts, an online prep course, virtual mentors, and a winter writing retreat.

“The support that I received from WEAC was so instrumental that I do not believe I would have passed without it. It’s hard to believe that it was all free to WEAC members,” said Sarah Schnuelle a recently certified NBCT and educator in Jefferson.

National Board Certification is now more accessible

Changes recently implemented by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards allow educators to complete the rigorous National Board Certification Process over a longer period of time and at a lower cost.

Getting more certified teachers was the goal of the National Board’s changes to the certification process. The hope is to make the process more flexible and efficient while maintaining the integrity and transformative nature of National Board Certification, according to NEA Today.

According to the National Board, the changes are:

  • The National Board now provides additional options for educators. While teachers can complete the entire certification process in one year, some may choose to do so over several years if that fits better with other demands on their time. While maintaining the same level of rigor, the process is grouped into four components.
  • The total cost of certification has decreased to about $1,900, with each of the four components costing $475 each. Candidates have the option to pay for and submit each component separately.

Thanks to the work of WEAC, Wisconsin certified teachers are eligible for reimbursement of costs and annual stipends. The NEA and its state affiliates – including WEAC – have also stepped in to make the process easier for candidates by providing “Jump Start” training. WEAC and Regions also offer other training including Writing Retreats like one being held February 10-11, 2017, in Madison. WEAC offices across the state provide members a number of valuable candidate supports including summer and early fall Jump Start sessions, access to online support through mynea360.org, face-to-face sessions, renewal support, a deep discount on an online support course through WEA Academy, writing retreats and a mentor match program. WEAC also provides an annual training opportunity for mentors. Find out more on the WEAC National Board Certification page.
